Enjoy!

One of the best things about mountainboarding is the people you meet, ride with and drink beers with. The first time I met Laurie Barnes was way back in 2003 when he was all full face helmets and body armour, killing it in the racing. Soon enough he traded his race kit in for a lovely white vest and a lazy skate style as he was going big and floaty over jumps whilst still finding time to race and beat the likes of Leon Robbins.
Nowadays, Laurie is all tie dye and evisu jeans, rides for Scrub and tries to flog T shirts from Thailand to pay for expensive festival food. Watch out, he will steal your beer.
I caught up with him to find out whats going on…

With Thanks to Peat & Tai at Re-Ride Media who made the epic trip all the way up from Wales to film this for us, please sit back and enjoy this short HD film of the first round of the ATBA.

With true mountainboard competition luck, after 3 weeks or near perfect weather, it decided to turn bad just days before the competition. But the show must go on, and we were not to be put off by a spot of rain (Well, a few days worth of spots, but hey).
Due to the late arrival of my brother (Owen), we made the decision to get an early(ish) night and get up at some un-godly hour and make it up to The Edge in time for practice and ready for the scheduled start of the competition.
So as 5:00 am struck our alarms sounded, up for a quick bite to eat, do a final bit of packing and then off on a nice drive to Shropshire by 6:00.
As we arrived, the sun was shining, there were a few merry Mountainboarding faces around and it looked set to be a good days riding, despite the horrific forecast! The track was wet, but ridable... And could only get better the more it was ridden.
With the good weather still with us, a prompt start was made to the proceedings and the qualifying races began! The new format seemed to be well received by all concerned and made for some great racing! It ran through all categories in order, finishing with the Pro's each time, where the hottest racing was taking place! Scrub Team Riders Laurie Barnes, James Chapman and yours truly all placed well in the qualification races, seeding us well for the forthcoming races!
After a nice long lunch break (and a BBQ cooked by Nath), courtesy of the lovely British weather, the racing was set to begin! The track was very wet at this point, and despite the additions of several bags of concrete it was more like sliding than riding! But we had all come here for one reason, to race, and we weren't about to let the weather stop us!

So the racing kicked off, starting with the under 16's were there was some tight racing! But Leo Gorman all the way from Ireland seemed be pulling away from the competition, and eventually came through on top with the rest of the field close on his heels!
There were only 4 ladies competing, but they put on as good a show as everyone else and had some close races. But it was another member of the irish crew, Lisa Mclernon, that came out on top, closely followed by Sam Frith, Becky Frost and Jess Gatley.
Next up were the masters, showing that they can still ride us hard us us young whipper snappers! The ATBAUK's very own Woodie Wright finish with top honours after some close racing, with Rich Sykes and Lee cambell coming through in 2nd and 3rd, good job old chaps!
The Open Am class were next, pulling out the stops and pushing each other with some racing the Pros could be envious of! Jake Goggin showed everyone how it was done, sliding through into first, with Zak Cambell topping his Dad Lees position by one and Nial Po-Fo coming through in 3rd.
Finally, the class everyone had been waiting for, the PRO'S!! The competition was hot with top riders of the likes of Pete Tatham, Matt Brind, Simon Lefebvre from France, Joel Treliving and the list goes on, so even racing on this soaked track was hot! After 4 rounds of heats it was done to the final, unfortunately no Scrub riders were present though, but it was a close race! Matt Brind took the glory with as storming a run as could be had in the conditions, with Tom Reese and Simon Lefebvre brining up 2nd and 3rd.
With that done, everyone evacuated the muddy hillside. Making for the relative comfort of the tents, with all fingers crossed for good weather at Round 2!

Id managed to get a week off work and got roped into dropping some friends off at Brean over in Somerset. This seemed like the perfect opportunity to go for a session over with the white horse lads its been a while since ive been over and the last few times its always been when there was no wind (it’s a bit of a curse I have it seems) I got over and managed to find my way up the horse only taking one wrong turn at the top there was a bit of a breeze and after sitting about for a bit trying to decide if I should launch a kite another flyer turns up and that’s enough to convince me. There wasn’t much but enough for some fun and a few jumps a nice chilled out fly. That night I spent at Nath’s lasagne was on the menu and an early start the next day meant I had to get my head down and grab some sleep. About 3 in the morning I was awoken by Toby, Nath’s dog. Toby always seemed really timid but right at that time he was wide eyed bushy tailed and going like a rabbit in heat with my shoulder, wrestling him off I managed to get back down and woke up the next day to go off to TKC towers for a coffee and a look around until Terry had got up and it was a reasonable hour to go for a fly with him. We went first to a new spot, terry had been before and it was a dream to fly on even if we couldn’t stay for long due to unforeseen circumstances. We left there stopped off in a little pub then went up the horse to finish the day off dean was with us and later Nth turned up. Ok so its not the smoothest wind im going to be flying in but it was a good trip and ill be looking forward to another.

I had an invite to be elsewhere this weekend but the forecast looked awful and its never good to spend a load of time and cash driving for something not to happen so I decided to stay home. Saturday afternoon im sat at rest bay in the car looking out over the beach wishing I had an ice cream and Pete gets me on the phone. A few words later and he’s convinced me to go into the hills back to our spot for a session the next day, when the wind is low its the only place worth going. Pete got to mine that night and after a few beers and a film we went to bed planning on an early start in the morning. Its not a nice walk up the side of the mountain but its worth it, well I guess it would be a nice walk if your not carrying a scrub board bag on your back full of kit (it weighs roughly the same as me). There wasn’t much wind about up there at first but as the sun got higher in the sky it started to pick up and we were able to do some nice free riding using the kites to gut up the slopes and then rolling down on the board. It picked up some more and we went up to the highest point we fly from it’s the final slope before the summit and you get a great view from up there. The camera came out and what followed can only be described as hang time. At the point where my board comes off im trying to come down, it didn’t work and all I can think is that if I don’t land soon the hill drops away very fast over the next stretch and my next safe point to land is going to the be the reservoir at the bottom. Sure pulling a safety in the air is a bad idea but it was a hot day and the water did look quite cooling. Keep your eyes posted for the full vid coming soon.

The Easter bank holiday came with some great forecasts, promises of onshore winds of a decent strength mean that beach trips were planned for all 4 days of the break but sadly the weather man must have been looking at the wrong charts. Friday and Saturday both came and went and brought little wind with them. With Sunday looming the only thing that stopped me going mad was the further promise of good winds and even a bit of sun, surely they cant get it wrong for 3 days in a row. I got up Sunday and shot down to the beach, rich had already phoned me to say he was there and it was blowing nicely so I decided to risk wasting the petrol and hope that he wasn’t winding me up and just getting me to meet him so he wasn’t soot on his own waiting for the wind to arrive. As I got there I found rich fast asleep in his car, it had been a rough night for him on the pop and he was looking a bit worse for it so he offered to take some pictures of me instead of flying. Have a look at the pictures blue sky and sunshine and so much sweet wind to go with them a perfect day.
